Frequently Asked Questions About Advance Directives and Health Care Planning in Connecticut

Individuals have rights, through common law, the Federal constitution and state statutes, to make informed decisions about their health care. Courts have also found that these rights may be safeguarded even where an individual is unable to speak for him or herself. These are known in Connecticut as "advance health care directives" or "health care directives." Connecticut law also permits individuals to appoint a health care representative, make wishes known about end of life decisions, donate anatomical gifts and designate a conservator.
