How to Use Your Security Deposit to Pay Rent
Under an order by Governor Lamont, if you paid a security deposit that is more than one month’s rent, you can ask your landlord to use the portion of your security deposit that is more than one month’s rent toward your April, May, or June 2020 rent.
There is no deadline for making this request, but you must ask for this in writing (by email, text message, or letter) and explain that because of the COVID-19 pandemic, you lost a job or had a major loss of income, or had a major increase in expenses.
Note: Your landlord can ask you to pay this amount back when the public health emergency is over.
You can copy the letter below and paste it into an email or text message, or print it out. We have provided the letter both in English and Spanish. Save a copy of your request for your records. You can take a screenshot of your text message or a photo of your letter and email it to yourself for safekeeping.
